Just like adults, even children ca be under a lot of stress. The numerous school activities, peer-pressure and homework can all up and cause kids some stress. Teaching Yoga to children can help them develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination. Such skills can even be carried beyond class and into their daily routines.

yoga, stress, anxiety, meditation, stress management

There’s a new trend in your kids’ classrooms nowadays. Instead of staring at the board in front, the kids are lying on the floor near their desks practicing yoga. According to fourth-grade teacher Elisabeth Beckwith, she wanted her students at Fernbank Elementary School in Decatur, Georgia, to pay attention to a lesson on Greek mythology. Linking the symbols of Greek gods to yoga poses, such as dog position and the stork pose, Beckwith has high hopes that the students will better retain the material and be re-energized in the middle of the day. It’s a fun way for them to think about things,Beckwith said. You know, it’s healthy for them because they’re getting the breathing right and getting the stretching right.
It’s fun, said nine-year old Jack Besser. It gets out the cramps after you’ve been sitting for an hour.
Another pupil, Medha Prakash, said that the yoga drills help her to concentrate. It makes me feel calm, relaxed and it gets all the stress out of me.
Just like adults, even children can be under a lot of stress. The numerous school activities, peer-pressure, and homework can cause kids to feel some stress. Teaching Yoga to children can help them develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility, and coordination. Such skills can even be carried beyond class and into their daily routines.
Two years ago, Beckwith started offering yoga in the classroom. with the help of other teachers at the suburban Atlanta public school. YogaKids International, an Indiana-based company, gives them instructions and distributes teaching materials to more than 50 schools around the country. These materials are large flash cards with kid-friendly poses that are easy for the students to imitate. Teachers hole them up to show the kids and read aloud the step-by-step instructions written on the back of the flashcards.
Aside from incorporating yoga into their lesson plans, physical education classes have incorporated the practice throughout the day to instill discipline. If you say you’re going to do yoga with the kids, they just immediately start focusing.said PE teacher Katie Bashor.
Deep breathing and basic yoga are taught to the students at their desks, from kindergarten through fifth grade, in order to cope with stress and anxiety that may occur before taking tests. School guidance counselor June Neal isn’t bothered about criticism that may be hurled at the school for taking away precious time from studying and learning to be spent on stretching and meditation. Neal believes that there’s more to elementary school that just reading, writing, and arithmetic. He has seen a measurable difference among the students, such as an improvement in test scores and test-taking skills due to a decrease in stress level after yoga routines. Neil added, You do need some down time… you do need some way to express yourself and to reduce anxiety that comes along with being in school.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, anxiety and stress are some of the biggest reasons why young students get sick at the start of the fall semester. I think parents underestimate how stressful going back to school is, he said. I think it’s as stressful as a grown-up starting a new job.
Weil believes that stressed-out kids may complain of stomach pain or a headache instead of dealing with a stressful situation at school. He recommends training children to do simple deep-breathing techniques, just as adults do, to help with stress management.

Whether we like it or not, we all know that an important part of our dental care involves making regular trips to the dentist, but the foundation block of oral hygiene lies at home. Not only is brushing and flossing twice a day of the utmost importance in maintaining a healthy and attractive smile, but the tools we use to perform these daily rituals can also make or break a beautiful set of teeth. So don’t pick up any old toothbrush ?find the one that’s right for you.

Our mouths, just like every other inch of us, come in all shapes and makes. We probably wouldn’t think too long about trying to squeeze into a shoe that doesn’t fit, but many of us expect that one size toothbrush should fit all. Baffled by the array of dental products we face in the store, we simply pick the color toothbrush we like best and move along, unwittingly undermining our oral health as we do so.

It is firstly important to find the right size toothbrush for our mouth, so that we can brush with comfort and reach the surface of every tooth. A tooth doesn’t get cleaned by just being in the vicinity of a brush! Be sure to find a toothbrush with the size and shape head that allows you to reach every surface of every single tooth.

Another important toothbrush quality is the type of bristles it utilizes. Bristles that are too hard can actually damage teeth and wear down the enamel that covers them, so be sure to opt for a softer type of brush, especially if you have a gum condition, such as gum disease or receding gums. For a good brushing down, look for a toothbrush with nylon bristles with rounded tips.

It is also of the utmost importance that you use a toothbrush that is up to the job, so be sure to replace your brush regularly. Every two to three months is a good time to replace, or when the bristles start to look bent and worn. Some toothbrushes some complete with a color-fade system that tells you exactly when your brush is ready for the garbage ?simply ditch the brush when the colored bristles start to fade.

A healthy set of teeth is an important part of looking and feeling good, and your trusty toothbrush is an important tool to help you maintain your oral health. So treat your teeth well with the right toothbrush, and don’t be afraid to show your smile.

Why Do You Need Teeth Whitening?

Do you know the enemy that causes tooth stains? It is quite
interesting to note that every tooth is comprised of an
inner dentin layer and a protective outer enamel layer
which is much harder.

Regular intake of food stuff, nicotine and caffeine tends
to form another coating over the enamel layer like a
pellicle film. This film can be removed chemically as well
as by scraping by a dentist.

Brushing helps to clean the teeth stains to some extent and
there are special abrasive toothpastes which help further
the process. Teeth whitening toothpastes are also available
which are effective in cleaning such stains on our teeth
enamel.

Our teeth enamel is porous in nature. Hydroxyapatite
crystals in the form of microscopic hexagonal “rods” make
up the enamel.

The accumulation of the foreign substances over the years
gets into the pores and settles on the inner layer where it
is very difficult to scrape them. Though these deep stains
are actually quite harmless, they do not look good.

Thus to get rid of these tough stains, people seek the help
of professional teeth whitening procedures.

During such teeth whitening procedures, a bleaching
chemical agent is used called carbamide peroxide or
hydrogen peroxide.

This is present in a tooth whitener and it triggers a
chemical – rather an oxidation reaction – which manage to
break the staining compounds.

The chemical compound carbamide peroxide breaks within the
mouth into urea and hydrogen peroxide.

The hydrogen peroxide plays a vital role in the teeth
whitening process.

Women’s Health Advice: Five Powerful Anti-aging Tips

Learn five powerful ways to enhance your anti-aging efforts…

womens health, anti-aging, joint health, beauty, cell rejuvenation, cutting edge science in genomics

Years ago, the word “anti aging” seemed to come only from science fiction movies. People joked about the Fountain of Youth and miracle medicines that were supposed to reverse the aging process to make one look 10 or 20 years younger. But today, anti-aging is more than a myth. Through scientific studies and the new cutting edge science in genomics, women are discovering that, by taking just a few steps, skin beauty and bodily cell health can indeed be encouraged. Here are five powerful anti aging tips for good women’s health.

1. Check Your Lifestyle

A lifestyle filled with health-threatening habits can be detrimental to your skin’s health and beauty. Smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages in excess, eating poorly or overeating, sunbathing, etc. all can speed up the aging process. Even taking anti-aging supplements may not help if you continue to do these things regularly. Remember, just as your bodily organs are affected by everything you eat or drink, so are your skin cells.

2. Eat for Good Skin Health

Good women’s health starts with eating healthy foods. Be sure to eat balanced meals with an abundance of leafy green vegetables and fruits. Eat protein-rich foods such as nuts or eggs to maintain good bone and joint health. Healthy eating and weight loss are both major contributors to good women’s health as well as beauty for the skin. The anti-aging process is much easier when you provide your body with the nutrients and vitamins it needs to repair cell damage and build healthy new cells on a daily basis.

3. Drink Water

The diet programs always cry aloud, “Drink water!” That’s because there are so many benefits to drinking water. Water is needed to help the body function properly, inside and out. Water brings life to all your body parts – and your skin as well. It brightens your complexion, helps rejuvenate skin cells to promote anti aging, and adds moisture to your body. You’ll be a well-oiled machine if you can commit to drinking plenty of water daily. Water is probably the most readily available anti-aging product you can get your hands on! So, replace those sodas (and diet sodas) with a healthy dose of water.

4. Stay in Shape

Staying in shape with exercise will also help with the anti-aging battle. Exercise encourages good bone and joint health and helps with the flow of blood through your body. That’s why many people say that exercise “gets your blood pumping!” The blood carries oxygen with it through your body, which is necessary for good overall health.

5. Use Anti-aging Supplements and Creams

Through the cutting edge science of genomics, anti-aging products are now being developed to aid in cell rejuvenation, which is needed for slowing down the aging process.

Genomics is the study of the complete DNA makeup of organisms. The recent discovery that is crucial to those interested in anti-aging products is that the repair of cells and the creation of healthy, strong cells is a major key to slowing the aging process. The new anti-aging products are all-natural and come in pills, creams or patches. Anti-aging products based on genomics help to provide the right amount of ingredients (vitamins and nutrients) needed by the body to repair cells and build new, healthy cells.

These five tips combined can help maximize the results for your anti-aging efforts. You’ll feel and look better than ever as you pass through the stages of life.

Follow-Up Care after the Teeth Whitening Treatment

Teeth whitening is not a single, one-time, or a permanent
process. If you see yourself eating substantial amounts of
teeth-staining food and drink, then your teeth will start
staining within a month or so.

Even if you avoid such food or drinks, then within a year
or thereabouts, you will require a follow-up teeth
whitening procedure or at the least, a touch-up.

So here are a few tips and tricks that will help you keep
your teeth as white as possible for the longest period of
time…

– Obviously, avoid food and rinks that stain the teeth.
Avoid black tea, strong coffee, etc and if you must drink
them, then do use a straw.

This will pass the liquid directly into the gullet,
by-passing the teeth. This way, you can have your cake and
eat it too.

– Feel free to brush and floss immediately after you
consume such beverages and food. Sometimes, that’s not
possible. So at very least, rinse and gargle after you
consume teeth staining food and beverages.

If you are at a restaurant or a party and are unable to
gargle, do so the moment you get home.

– Daily and regular oral hygiene is critical. Brush your
teeth twice a day, floss at least once or better still,
twice daily. Not only will you clear the gunk out, you will
also keep your teeth white and healthy.

– Use a teeth whitening toothpaste once or twice a week

– Ask your dentist and follow-up on the touch-up
treatments.

Yes, Your Office Might Be Causing You Pain

The conventional wisdom that says that office workers don’t have to worry about their health is completely wrong, with more and more medical professionals noting just how bad for one’s health office conditions can be. From physical stress that has people clamoring for pain relief, to possible respiratory problems caused by office environmental conditions, it is becoming increasingly clear that office work can be very bad for your health.

pain relief

Once upon a time, it was believed that heavy lifting and dirty work would be the main work-related causes for people seeking pain relief. It was once believed that people who worked in offices and the like were at a lower risk of contracting diseases due to their work, as opposed to the ones that worked in the field. Of course, that bit of conventional wisdom is now being tossed out the window. In the modern office’s cubicle-based environments, employees are at just as high a risk of work-related illness as anyone else. According to some studies, they might be even worse off that people working in the field depending on the conditions of the working environment.

The first indication of a problem came from the increasing use of pain relief medication by office workers. This is often attributed to the cramped spaces, repetitive movements, and the lack of proper back support from the average office chair. According to experts, anyone that is forced to sit in the same position for hours on end, with very little room to maneuver or to change posture, is going to experience bouts of discomfort. That discomfort is going to eventually turn into pain, if left unchecked. The increasing amount of office workers taking pain relief medication tend to do so because of back pain, largely due to the lack of chairs with adequate back support.

Cramped cubicle conditions can also be considered a bit of a health hazard. In such cramped situations, all it takes is just one person to get sick with a communicable disease for most of the office to get it. The close quarters conditions also make it difficult for people to move around, which can lead to stress on the body due to repetitive movements and the lack of “leg room.?Pain relief can also be sought because of these problems, especially if the office working areas are poorly designed. Unfortunately, most medical experts believe that the average office is too cramped and is poorly designed, making employees there prone to discomfort and pain.

The very construction of some offices can also put their employees at risk. Centralized climate control is a common feature of most offices, and for the most part, people don’t have problems with them. However, if the centralized system is not properly maintained or cleaned, then it poses a problem. Lack of filtration in the climate control and exhaust system, combined with tight conditions, can result in any number of respiratory problems. Signs of this can include everything from sneezing fits to more serious respiratory conditions. Allergic reactions are also fairly common occurrences, particularly during certain periods of the year.
There are certain things that can be done to help reduce the risk of becoming ill because of office conditions. A little skeletal stretching and exercise to get the blood flowing properly prior to work can help reduce the need for pain relief drugs due to repetitive stress on certain areas of the body. Proper posture and positioning in relation to the keyboard and monitor can also help reduce the stress placed on the limbs, back, and neck. However, there’s very little the average employee can do when faced with the problem of poor office design.

When Teeth Whitening Does Not Work

Did you know that in certain cases, teeth whitening is not
advisable and may not be hundred percent effective? For
example, for children below sixteen years bleaching is not
advisable since the pulp chamber or the nerve of the tooth
remains enlarged.

Teeth whitening below this age may cause irritation of the
pulp or could make it more sensitive. Similarly, pregnant
women as well as lactating mothers should also not undergo
this process.

Moreover, people having sensitive teeth and gum problems,
receding gums and problems or defects in restoration must
opt for their dentist’s advice before undergoing the
process.

Similarly, those having allergies to peroxide are also not
recommended to undergo the bleaching process.

Diseases in gums and teeth and decaying enamel are also not
suitable cases for teeth whitening. Any cavity in the tooth
may cause the bleaching solutions to seep into the existing
decay causing further irritation.

Again, people having exposed tooth roots are also
discouraged since these roots do not have enamel cover.

Teeth containing any kind of filling like crowns, veneer,
bonding and bridges can not be bleached. Doing so may
result in uneven whitening and it is advisable to complete
the whitening process two weeks before the fillings.

While the yellowish stains can be whitened easily, brown,
gray, bluish-gray and purple ones show less response to
teeth whitening.

Moreover the result may also vary from person to person.
Smokers must refrain from smoking during teeth whitening
the process to get the best results. The desired color
should be a shade whiter than the whites of an eye.

gain weight

It may be hard for you to believe in this morbidly obese country that we live in but there do exist people who have trouble gaining weight and need help to do it. This is true in famine ravaged countries in say Africa for obvious reasons but it is less intuitive in this country where there is no shortage of calorie rich food. So who are these people who want/need to gain weight?

Well there are at least three major groups of people in America that need help to gain weight. These are athletes, persons with iatrogenic and disease-caused cachexia, people, who are unable to feed themselves correctly, and lastly people whose bodies are using calories at a higher rate than “normal” people and not counting athletes. So lets take a few minutes to at least consider these groups of people.

First and perhaps most obvious are athletes who have trouble gaining weight on a normal diet because they are burning off as much or more calories than they are taking in. Athletes, especially those at the elite level, often consume ungodly amounts of food just to supply their bodies with enough fuel to work at supernormal levels of physical activity and support fantastically high rates of metabolism. Second are those with diseases that cause a loss of appetite such as anorexia for an obvious one or mental illness or cancer with associated cachexia that are maybe less obvious. In the case of anorexia nervosa there needs to be cognitive behavioral therapy that changes the basic structure of thought for these people that makes them think that they are fat. For mental illness a mixture of both behavior therapy and drugs that stimulate the appetite and helps the person want to consume enough calories to gain weight. For cancer patients these appetite stimulating drugs are really the solution if they work.

The group that is unable to feed themselves is the third group to discuss and these are mainly people at the extremes of age. It is obvious that babies need to be fed in order for them to gain weight but it is perhaps less obvious in the elderly who often survive on what is known as a “tea-and-toast” diet because they either do not possess the physical energy or they no longer have the mental faculty to provide themselves with a good nutrition.

The last group are those that have a high metabolic rate but aren’t athletes with lots of physical activity. The best example of this are people whose bodies are fighting serious illness, most commonly infection. The immune system needs lots of energy so it is important to keep these patients well fed so that they can at least maintain if not gain weight.

Every one wants to smile but their yellow teeth do not
allow them. So they consider methods which might whiten
their teeth fast and without any pain.

Bleach-based or non-bleach based are the 2 basic types of
teeth whitening measures. See which of the whitening
procedures best suit you and your pocket.

The cheapest possible option is to use teeth whitening
toothpastes. These contain polishing agents that help
remove everyday, light stains which are also known as
surface stains.

They don’t have bleach and are not as powerful or as
expensive as hydrogen peroxide based teeth whitening
products.

The latter is a bleaching chemical that helps lighten
surface stains along with more stubborn, inner stains on
the enamel.

Such hydrogen peroxide based whitening products are applied
orally, with a brush to the teeth enamel.

Such products are available in 2 forms

– the first is gel which is applied for a restricted number
of days till you can see the desired effect on your teeth.
The results of the gel normally last for a few months after
which, your teeth will begin to yellow and stain as before.

Of course, you may use natural teeth whitening remedies to
continue the effect of this gel for a slightly longer
period of time. Gels usually don’t cost more than $20 or so
but they must be applied at least twice a day.

Teeth whitening strips are another option costing about $50
and containing peroxide. You may also consider the more
expensive and more permanent procedures like in-office
whitening and tray- based whitening.

Your Chances of Surviving Cancer

Understanding how cancer work is a vital part to the battle against this disease

health, cancer, medical software, what is cancer

Understanding cancer is not difficult if we start looking at cancer from the inside. The cancer starts in the cells, and Cells can break off from a malignant tumour and start to grow in another part of the body, this is known as a secondary tumour. Cells in these tumors are abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cells grow by dividing in half, such that one cell will become two, and two become four (these new cells are called daughter cells), etc . Normally, there are very strict rules as to when a cell can grow or not.

Cells in benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Most important, benign tumors are rarely a threat to life. Cells deprived of oxygen die and decay, which is why some cancers have an odor. The term for this new blood vessel growth is angiogenesis.

Obviously as you may know already, malignant tumors are cancerous. These tumors contain cells that divide and grow without order. Malignant tumors (cancers) can spread to other tissues or organs nearby or to other parts of the body. This is called metastasis . Malignant tumors are tumors that are capable of spreading by invasion and metastasis. By definition, the term “cancer” applies only to malignant tumors.Malignant means that the disease, if not treated, can progress and lead to death. Malignant tumors are cancer. Cancer cells can invade and damage tissues and organs near the tumor. Malignant tissues can invade and damage other tissues and organs. Cancer cells can then break away from the tumour and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system, spreading the cancer to other parts of the body.

The serious part of this is that malignant tumours metastasize to other organs of the body and continue developing unlimitedly.

In the other hand Benign tumors can often be removed by surgery, and they are not likely to return. Some tumors of the testicle are benign, but most are not. Benign tumors are not usually life threatening. Benign tumors, although they may cause some health problems depending on their size and location, are not life-threatening.

Benign (noncancerous) tumors can also grow anywhere in your mouth. Benign tumors are well-differentiated —in other words, they differ only slightly in appearance and behavior from their tissue of origin. These tumors are slow growing and noninvasive, do not spread throughout the body, and will often have a fibrous tissue capsule around them.

Treatments are related to a particular cancer’s usual behavior. For a cancer that is aggressive locally (where it is first detected), local treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, and photodynamic therapy may be used. Treatment depends on the kind of treatment the patient had when first treated. If the patient had surgery alone, the patient may have surgery again or radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy destroys or damages cancer cells by targeting high energy x-rays to the tissues. Radiation therapy is usually painless and is provided in an out patient setting. Radiation is a special kind of energy carried by waves or a stream of particles originating from radioactive substances and delivered by special machines. These radioactive x-rays or gamma rays can penetrate the cell wall and damage the nucleus of the cell which prevents growth and division of cells.
