Drinking just one ounce, or two tablespoons, of tart concentrated cherry juice every day can help alleviate arthritis pain. That’s because tart cherries, specifically Montmorency tart cherries, contain anthocyanins and two important antioxidants: isoqueritrin and queritrin.

Anthocyanins create cherries’ dark red pigment. Arthritis inflammation and pain is caused by the hormone prostaglandin; it is directly related to two enzymes that cause tissue inflammation and the resulting pain. Anthocyanins inhibit those two enzymes, decreasing inflammation and joint pain. Remarkably, the pain-inhibiting strength is comparable to ibuprofen and naproxen. And laboratory tests at Michigan State University find that tart cherry compounds are at least 10 times more effective than aspirin in reducing inflammation–without any of aspirin’s side effects.

Queritrin and isoqueritrin are flavonoids. Flavonoids function as antioxidants, meaning that they destroy free radicals within the body to generally help prevent cancer. Queritrin and isoqueritrin help eliminate the byproducts of stress, and they help slow down the aging process in general. Queritrin also possesses anti-inflammatory effects similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Queritrin can also inhibit the body’s production of inflammation-causing leukotrienes and histamine.

Anthocyanins possess additional beneficial properties. They are powerful antioxidants, meaning they destroy free radicals within the body to generally help prevent cancer. Anthocyanins are even more powerful than vitamin E. Tart cherries boast a whopping 26.5 grams of anthocyanins–the highest of all fruits. Anthocyanins also help prevent plaque buildup in artery walls, which in turn helps prevent heart disease; they’re more potent in this regard than vitamins C and E. Also, tart cherries are a low-glycemic food, so they’re diabetic-friendly.

The antioxidant queritrin also possesses additional beneficial properties. It is one of the most powerful anti-cancer agents known. Its antioxidant properties are superior to vitamins C and E.

And if these powerful antioxidants in tart cherry juice weren’t enough, it also contains ellagic acid, which may be the most potent substance to prevent cancer. It has been found to inhibit cancer cell growth.

Drinking two tablespoons of Montmorency tart cherries daily is the equivalent of eating 60 cherries. The tart cherry juice can be added to any other beverage, such as water or tea. Or you can even add it to a fruit smoothie for breakfast or as an afternoon pick-me-up.

The highest quality Montmorency cherry juice available is a measurement known as 68 brix. Look for juice that’s clear and sediment-free. Who knew alleviating arthritis pain could taste so good?

A quick online search for the term Botox will reveal that there are as many people searching for Botox as there people searching for Botox alternatives. Botox was approved by the FDA in 2002 as a cosmetic procedure to get rid of wrinkles. A simple needle injection was demonstrated to miraculously eliminate nagging lines and wrinkles and the boom was on?until people started to read about what “tox?in Botox really was.

Botox is the trade name used for Botulinum Toxin Type A. Yes, I said toxin as in poison. Botox is in fact a relative of botulism, a kind of food poisoning. This food poisoning occurs when a person eats any kind of food that contains a neurotoxin which is created by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.

Botulinum Toxin Type A, which is just one of seven of the neurotoxins that are produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botulinum Toxin Type A causes serious fatal conditions such as paralysis.

When this occurs, the neurotransmitter that is in charge of triggering muscle contractions (acetylcholine) can no longer be released. The Botulinum toxins have attacked the proteins such as SNAP-25 that are supposed to be essential for release of this acetylcholine.

The Botulinum toxins have now accomplished blocking the signals that are supposed to tell the victim’s muscles to contract.

By now you’re probably wondering why anyone would want to inject these toxins into their body INTENTIALY. The reason is that we want to get results fast and Botox does work. If any area of your body can be prevented from moving, then it can’t contract and guess what? It can’t wrinkle – that is the phenomenon of Botox!

Botox starts to work within hours but the results will not last permanently. Depending on your body, the effects of Botox can last anywhere from 3 to 8 months.

As for whether Botox is dangerous or not, the dangers remain fairly low.

Botox is definitely not recommended for people with neuromuscular disorders as it would be dangerous for them. It is also not recommended for people with cardiovascular disease. If you don’t have either of these problems you should still consult with your physician before considering Botox.

Studies have shown that if you are a person that is a good candidate for Botox injections and the injections are administered by a qualified profession you should not experience any dangerous side effects. If you are searching for a way to look longer, generally Botox is a relatively safe way to combat the aging process.

Medical science needs more reliable means of diagnosing appendicitis. Commonly misdiagnosed and mistreated, appendicitis is a very problematic internal disease that requires special attention and prompt medical intervention. Due to the fact that appendicitis usually generates vague, non-specific symptoms, doctors are faced with a real challenge when it comes to diagnosing this type of disease. Lack of outwardly visible, clear appendicitis manifestations often leads to delayed medical intervention or, more commonly, unnecessary surgery. Recent studies indicate that the great majority of appendectomies are performed on healthy patients as a result of misdiagnosis.

The unspecific character of appendicitis symptoms renders clinical examinations inconclusive in revealing clear signs of the disease. In addition to routine physical examinations and blood analyses, doctors often rely on ultrasound tests, computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in order to confirm the presence of appendicitis in patients. However, these medical techniques aren’t always 100 percent accurate and under special circumstances they may actually be inappropriate.

For instance, computerized tomography scans can’t be performed on pregnant women, as the procedure involves exposure to radiation, thus interfering with the normal development of the fetus. Although they are safer, ultrasound tests are not very effective in finding conclusive physiological signs of appendicitis in pregnant women or patients with certain types of internal disorders. Despite the fact that magnetic resonance imaging is one of the best techniques used in diagnosing appendicitis at the moment, this procedure also has its minuses.

However, a new, revolutionary scanning agent is now available for medical professionals. Neutrospec is a latest generation technique that promises to solve the existent issues in the process of diagnosing appendicitis. Neutrospec is a radio-labeled antibody that sticks to the membrane of white blood cells once it is injected inside the blood stream. The labeled white blood cells then indicate the site of infection, thus helping doctors in diagnosing various types of internal disorders that involve bacterial infections. The radio-labeled antibodies can be easily monitored with the means of a gamma camera, requiring no additional medical equipment. Unlike other blood scanning agents, Neutrospec allows doctors to monitor the activity of white blood cells right after the radio-labeled antibodies are introduced inside the body. Apart from being easy to use, Neutrospec doesn’t require further blood manipulation and thus it is considered to be a lot safer than other scanning agents.

Neutrospec has been successfully used to correctly diagnose patients with latently evolving appendicitis and thus it is considered to be superior to other medical techniques that can’t always reveal clear signs of such internal disorders. Even during its testing period, Neutrospec has proved to be a remarkable medical procedure for diagnosis. With the means of Neutrospec, more than 95 percent of patients with suspected appendicitis have been correctly diagnosed in less than an hour. Its ease to use, reliability and safety render Neutrospec appropriate for diagnosing various cases of appendicitis, minimizing the risk of misdiagnosis and unnecessary appendectomy.

Depression is a very common problem which can affect your quality of life, from just slowing you down to seriously incapacitating you. It’s also a serious issue for the health service in both the USA and the UK and is predicted to become the second biggest burden on both countries health services in less than two decades. Many people suffer in silence, not wanting to go to their doctor with a condition which some still find embarrassing and difficult to discuss. Others find that the side-effects of the antidepressants they are prescribed prove almost as debilitating as depression itself, or simply that the drugs do not have the right effect. This can leave sufferers feeling even more isolated and unhappy. However, research suggests that there may be a natural remedy for what is often referred to as ‘the common cold of mental illness?

After extensive research scientists have come to believe that high quality fish oils, rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acids, are the natural solution to depression, even in severe cases in which the patient has not responded to other treatment. The key to alleviating depressive symptoms is EPA or elcosapentaenoic acid, an essential fatty acid of the Omega 3 group which can be found in some specialist fish oils. It has been shown by brain scans to regenerate the brain, and it is also possible that it stimulates stem cells into producing new nerve cells.

EPA has a positive effect on the brain regardless of whether you are depressed or otherwise of low mood. It has been shown to improve mental performance as well as a host of other health benefits including decreasing the risk of heart attacks, deep vein thrombosis or DVT, and stroke. An international group of medical scientists have assembled an impressive body of research over the last couple of years which gives weight to these astonishing beneficial claims. Consultant psychiatrist Dr Basant Puri, who is also a senior lecturer at London’s Imperial College MRI unit, is an enthusiastic supporter of the EPA cause and prescribes it in a high-quality form to his depressed patients at his Hammersmith Hospital Clinic. He says they are responding well; “Studies show that this nutrient, found in high quality fish oil, can clear the symptoms of depression within three or four weeks, and then the patient can ward off any further attacks just by taking a daily supplement.”

Dr Puri first became intrigued by the function of EPA when studying nutrition, and when he became a psychiatrist and brain imager he could see for himself the benefits of supplementing diet with EPA. It became clear that a lack of EPA in diet may in fact be a major cause of depression. Dr Puri’s work and insights led him to consider the accepted view on the biochemistry of the brain and to think differently. He realised that human beings ate more fish during the period in history when our brains were still developing, and saw that “The trouble today is that many things we eat, along with stress and nicotine, inhibit the body’s own ability to produce [essential fatty acids].”

One 21-year-old man Dr Puri first treated EPA with had suffered from depression for seven years or more, but after taking the supplement for nine months he had a new lease of life. He set up his own business and was planning to travel to the US to study ?a significant change had occurred. And not only in his mood, but in his brain itself. A comparison of a brain scan taken before the EPA treatment with one taken after indicated, to Dr Puri’s amazement, that the brain had partially regrown. Depressive patients show low levels of electrical activity in the brain and an actual reduction in the cerebral cortex ?this patient showed nerve cell regrowth and a thickening of the greater part of the brain, commonly referred to as the ‘grey matter? Dr Puri took this as indicative that EPA, with its apparent power to stimulate the brain to make it repair itself, could bring hope to people suffering from a wide variety of conditions.

Omega 3 is found chiefly in oily fish ?tuna, fresh salmon, pilchards, sardines and mackerel ?but these alone do not provide EPA in sufficient qualities to have this amazing effect on the brain. Supplements, which can be taken alongside antidepressants in complete safety, are necessary to treat depression. It’s not a good idea to stop antidepressants immediately, without a gradual reduction as advised by your GP, as you can suffer severe side effects. You should always consult your GP before embarking on any treatment, however, and should be especially careful with fish oil supplements if you are taking any blood-thinning medication as EPA also thins the blood.

It’s good to find an EPA supplement which contains a lesser quantity of DHA, another Omega 3 fatty acid, as too much of this can lessen the effectiveness of EPA. Patients suffering from mild to moderate depression should take two capsules twice a day with food, while patients with severe depression should take a higher dose after consultation with a specialist. As with antidepressants it’s advised that you continue to take the supplements after the symptoms have gone ?in the case of EPA, Dr Puri recommends two capsules a day as a maintenance dose. There are positive side effects of EPA too ?patients will find their skin looking fresher and the condition of their hair and nails improving, which can help to give that boost of self-esteem depression sufferers benefit so much from.

Asthma, characterized by difficulty in breathing, is a chronic lung condition. Asthma patients have hyper responsive airways that narrow down when irritated. This makes air movement difficult and cause wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. The two factors that provoke asthma are ?
?Triggers ?They irritate the airways and result in Bronchoconstriction. The common triggers of Bronchoconstriction are cold air, dust, strong fumes, inhaled irritants, emotional upsets and smoke.

?Causes or Inducers ?They result in symptoms which may last longer. Allergies in the form of pollen, animal secretion and molds, and Respiratory viral infections are the most common inducers.

Asthma diagnosis is important for proper treatment. The common symptoms for asthma are allergies, hay fever and eczema. The chance of a child developing asthma is much more when there is a family history of allergies and asthma. The common symptoms of asthma in children are breathing problem, repeated nasal stuffiness, itchy eyes, eczema, hives and persistent cough followed by cold. Diagnosis of asthma involves physical examination, chest x-ray, blood tests and sputum studies, allergy prick skin testing, challenge tests, differential diagnosis and a trial use of asthma medications.

Asthma affects twice as many boys as girls in childhood. It affects more teenager girls than boys. In adulthood, the ratio becomes equal. The risk of uncontrolled asthma is greater than the risk a mother or fetus faces due to medication used to control asthma. Uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy can produce serious maternal and fetal complications like premature birth, low birth weight and maternal blood pressure changes.

The most effective treatment for asthma is identifying triggers, such as pets or aspirin, and limiting or eliminating exposure to them. Anti-inflammatory medications with Bronchodilators are used for immediate relief of symptoms. Asthma medications come in various forms like a metered dose inhaler or a puffer, dry powder inhalers and nebulizers.

The prognosis for asthma is good for children with mild disease. For asthma diagnosed during childhood, 54% will no longer carry the diagnosis after a decade. Asthma seems to be more prevalent in athletes than the rest. A relatively high incidence of asthma is found in sports such as cycling, mountain biking, and long-distance running, and a relatively lower incidence is found in weightlifting and diving. The exercise-induced asthma shares many features with allergic asthma.

Exercise studies are helpful in diagnosing and assessing this condition. People with mild asthma (infrequent attacks) may use relief medication as needed. Those who have persistent asthma should take control medications on a regular basis to prevent symptoms from occuring. A severe asthma attack requires a medical evaluation and may need hospitalization, oxygen, and intravenous medications.

Home Remedies – Facts or Quacks?

That’s what I recently asked myself. Myths and legends often have their basis in a grain of truth. So I wondered if home remedies, alternative treatments, and folklore cures might also be based on truth. A little research provided these astonishing results!

Itching For A Cure

Edward Jenner is widely credited as the father of the smallpox vaccination. However, twenty years earlier in 1774, a quick-thinking English farmer named Benjamin Jesty saved his family from smallpox using some pretty unorthodox methods.

Waiting Until The Cows Come Home

In 1774 the highly infectious and deadly smallpox disease was epidemic. Farmer Jesty, immune to the disease because he had survived it in childhood, feared for the lives of his pregnant wife and children. Many country folk knew that people who had previously caught the milder disease of cowpox from an infected cow did not catch the normally-fatal smallpox disease.

A Desperate Plan

Frantic to find a solution before his family caught the disease, Jesty took his family to a nearby farm where cows were infected with cowpox. He injected his family with diseased cowpox cells from the cows. Because vacca is Latin for cow, this procedure later became known as vaccination.

This Isn’t Bull

The mild cowpox disease came and went in the children. His pregnant wife had complications and required the aid of the local doctor. His family did not catch the deadly smallpox disease, but word leaked out. Poor Jesty was ridiculed by his neighbors, who expected his family to turn into cows, or at least grow horns!

Edward Jenner was a tireless crusader in promoting the benefits of smallpox vaccination. However, it was a desperate farmer who used his quick wit and country folklore to save his family 20 years earlier.

Regardless of whom history credits, this home remedy definitely rates as a fact rather than a quack!

If you liked this home remedy information, you can find more through the resources shown below. Home remedies can be effective, and may save you time and money.

Every minute of every day, our cells are busy breaking down the molecules of certain substances and building up the molecules of others. When we refuel our bodies with essential nutrients, the engine keeps working efficiently with minimal risk of breakdown. But when we consistently try to refuel with foods of poor nutritional value, the engine, your body, starts to work inefficiently and may lead to various health problems.

What is the Difference Between Brown and Golden Flaxseed?
Brown flax, can be eaten however, it is grown for the commercial Linseed Oil , paint, and solvents Industries. The Omega Golden Flax Seed was developed for human consumption and is preferred for the food market because of its nutty-buttery flavor. The nutritional value of golden flaxseed vs. brown flaxseed are very similar if the samples are of the same quality. Quality is very important in determining the omega-3 and omega-6 content and overall nutritional value.

Some of the Clear Benefits of Flaxseeds Includes:

1. Lowered blood cholesterol levels
2. Lowered high blood pressure
3. Increased energy, vitality, and stamina
4. Increased sense of calmness under stress
5. Reduced threat of blood clots
6. Protection against cancers, particularly hormone sensitive cancers such as breast and prostate

Can Flaxseed Eliminate Cancer?
The results showed that the flaxseed pre-lignans, converted in the intestines by bacteria into powerful anti-cancer lignans, were extremely efficient, in low doses, in killing the breast cancer cells in these volunteer women.

The results were nothing short of dramatic. The growth index in the cancer cells was reduced 34.2%, while the level of programmed cell death increased 30.7%. Women who expressed the HER2 metastatic oncogene saw its expression decrease by a dramatic 71%.

Researchers at The University of Tromso now report that fish oil supplementation lowers blood pressure significantly in people with hypertension and has no effect on glucose control even in people with mid diabetes.

The “best?flu remedy seems to vary by who you talk to. Some people think that certain over-the-counter medications are the best way to get relief. Others feel homeopathic remedies work the best. Still others feel that only their doctor can help make them make the appropriate choice.

If you talked to my husband he would tell you the best flu remedy is to not get the flu (he’s not always the most helpful person). He talks smart because he hardly ever gets sick. I’m very jealous of him. I think his genes must be better than mine because he doesn’t eat healthier or exercise any more than I do yet I get sick a lot more often than he does.

I catch the flu nearly every year. I’ve tried over-the-counter medications, some homeopathic remedies, and have gone to my doctor when I’ve gotten bad cases of the flu.

Below I’ve listed some common, and some not so common remedies for the flu. Some of the remedies are homeopathic; others involve taking over-the counter medications; while others are prescription.

1) This first item is more of a suggestion to keep yourself from getting sick again rather than a remedy but I think it’s a really good tip. Put your toothbrush in a cup with hydrogen peroxide in it to prevent you from re-infecting yourself (especially if you have a cold). Toothbrushes are a haven for germs and the hydrogen peroxide will kill the bacteria on your toothbrush. You may decide to put your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide every day to kill the bacteria that accumulate.

2) In addition to putting your toothbrush in a cup of hydrogen peroxide you may want to put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ears. It can help kill flu (or cold) germs. Sometimes the hydrogen peroxide will sting a little. The process is to put a few drops in one ear with a cotton ball or a Q-tip. After a few minutes drain the excess fluid out onto a Kleenex or paper towel. Then do the same thing in the other ear. Repeat the process after an hour or two. Continue to repeat until the hydrogen peroxide doesn’t bubble when it’s put into the ear (usually after 2 or 3 times). The hydrogen peroxide is said to be most effective if it’s used as soon as possible after getting sick.

3) Elderberry extract can lessen the duration of the flu according to studies done in Israel. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or herbalist for advice on how much and how often to take it, and also to make sure it will not interfere with any other medications or supplements you may already be taking.

4) Boneset is another herb said to help lessen the intensity and duration of the flu. It is usually added to boiled water, along with honey and lemon (to make it easier to drink) and then sipped. Again, consult with your doctor, pharmacist or herbalist for the recommended dosage.

5) Oscillococcinum is a popular homeopathic/natural product taken to help with the flu symptoms of body aches and pains, fever, and chills. One of the reasons it is so popular is that it does not cause drowsiness.

6) Naturoksinum is another natural flu remedy available. It is touted as being able to cut the severity of flu symptoms in half. It is one of the most popular flu remedies in France and is available for purchase in the United States.

7) Echinacea is another popular natural remedy for the
flu. Again, because it is an herbal product, check with your doctor, pharmacist, or herbalist to make sure it is safe for you to take and that it does not interfere with any other medications or supplements you are currently taking.

8) Tamiflu and Relenza are two prescription medications available for treating the flu. For either medication to work best it should be taken with two days of the onset of flu symptoms. Both Tamiflu and Relenza work by preventing the flu virus from infecting cells in the body that are still healthy, and they both work against influenza A and B.

9) Drink health juices such as mangosteen, noni, goji, aloe vera, or acai berry. They are not only great juices to drink if you get the flu, but they can also help prevent it because the juices are good at boosting a person’s immune system. My personal health juice of choice is a mangosteen juice. It tastes great and helps me feel better overall.

10) There are several products available to use in your bath or even your shower to help with the symptoms of the flu. Abra Bath for colds and the flu is a product you add to bath water. It is said to help relieve congestion, reduce body aches, and help relieve the chills associated with the flu. The makers of Sudafed offer a product called Sudacare Shower Soothers. They are tablets that react with warm shower water to create vapors of eucalyptus, menthol, and camphor to help with congestion.

11) Nasal sprays to help relieve flu symptoms are available over the counter. One product is called Flu Relief. Nasal sprays aren’t as popular as most other remedies though because many people dislike using nasal sprays.

12) Fever, headaches, and aching muscles are common symptoms of the flu. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen, both available over the counter can help lessen the pain.

13) A persistent cough may be present when a person has the flu (http://www.microflu.com/flusymptoms/). There are many over the counter cough medicines, such as Robitussin (which has specific formulas of its products for helping with flu symptoms), to help quiet a cough associated with the flu.

14) Congestion is another symptom that a person may get with the flu. An oral decongestant can help loosen the congestion. Again there are many over the counter products available to fight flu symptoms such as congestion. Vick’s vapor rub can also help ease congestion.

15) A sore throat can be another bothersome symptom of the flu. Throat lozenges or sprays can help with the pain. I gargle with warm salt water every hour when my throat is sore. It’s a remedy my Mom used when I was little. It worked for me then and it still works for me now.

16) Rest is a very important part of fighting the flu. Your body needs rest to help it fight the infection in your body. So give in to that urge to cuddle up under the covers and rest. You’re likely to feel better faster if you do.

17) Drink as many fluids are you can when you have the flu. Avoid drinks with caffeine because caffeinated drinks act as mild diuretics. Water is the best liquid but can be hard for someone who feels sick to drink enough of. Other good choices of liquid are clear juices, Gatorade (or any of the other sports drinks available) as well as flavored water and Pedialyte. When I was a child and had the flu my Mom always gave me 7-up to drink. I could drink it without feeling sick to my stomach and it tasted good so I was able to drink enough of it to keep myself from getting dehydrated.

Always remember that the flu (depending on what strain you have contracted) can be a life-threatening illness if not treated properly. Don’t be afraid to contact your doctor if your symptoms don’t start to get better in a few days or if they are very severe.

Another thing to remember when you have the flu (or are sick with anything else) is to only treat the symptoms you have. There are lots of over-the-counter products available to treat flu symptoms. Many of those products relieve multiple symptoms. But sometimes you don’t have all the symptoms that particular medication treats. Look for products that treat the symptoms you have, but nothing more. You don’t want to over-medicate yourself.

I know how terrible it can be for you at nights and even when you wake up. The burning back pain you experience can be a terrible problem.

I know that because of this burning pain, you hardly get all the sleep you need at nights.

You are not alone… and thankfully there are workable solutions that you can use to not only prevent future causes, but also solve the present back pain you are experiencing.

Experts have agreed that the kind of mattress you sleep on plays a very important role in back pains suffered by most people.

There are some mattresses that do you a lot of harm when you sleep on them. And the fact that you spend many hours EVERYDAY on such mattresses will only mean one thing!

You are only spending more time hurting your back…without your knowledge.

To solve this problem you should check the kind of mattress you are sleeping on. By simply changing the mattress for a better type, like a memory foam mattress, you can help to completely eliminate the problem of back-pain from your life.

Over 20 years ago when they were invented by NASA, memory foam mattresses have stood the test of time. Today, many people like you with back problems use memory foam mattresses and it helps them when they sleep.

Memory foam mattresses work by giving you a natural position when you sleep, so that you don’t experience any pressure points. Back pains are mostly a result of sleeping at the wrong position at night, either due to the poor quality of the mattress or due to your wrong sleeping position.

Memory foam mattresses handle both of these problems.

So, if you want to end your back pain nightmare, you should try a memory foam mattress.

An Easier Type Of Medical Care

Patients undergo fewer exploratory surgeries with newer and more sophisticted imaging procedures.

An Easier Type Of Medical Care

More and more, medical advances are cutting down on cutting people open. Improved imaging procedures make diagnostic and even surgical procedures less invasive.

Medical imaging enables a range of less-invasive, highly targeted medical therapies that translate into better and more comfortable care for patients. Because they are less invasive, these treatments mean fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and, in many cases, no incisions or surgery.

Physician specialty groups, independent organizations and peer-reviewed journals agree that medical imaging is one of the most important parts of modern medical care. In fact, many renowned medical experts believe that without imaging to guide diagnosis and treatment, patient safety would be compromised and quality of care diminished.

Doctors have long used surgery for diagnostic as well as therapeutic purposes, looking inside a patient to see what’s causing his or her symptoms. Now, improved imaging procedures mean this is often unnecessary, saving patients discomfort, time and money. Here are some of the ways imaging has improved health care:

• Image-guided biopsies allow doctors to remove a small piece of tissue for testing through a tiny incision, while still being able to see exactly what they’re doing.

• CT scans can reduce the need for invasive procedures and additional imaging tests in helping physicians diagnose pulmonary embolism.

• Microcoil stents are used to repair brain aneurysms, reducing a patient’s chance of death by almost a quarter. Placing stents would be impossible without the use of video X-ray imaging technology.

• The preferred therapy for reopening blocked arteries and permitting blood flow to the heart is a procedure called coronary angioplasty. Again, only through the use of imaging technology can doctors see where the blockage is and how to get there.
